Outnumbered

Outnumbered is a series of series.

I like to work fairly quickly and turn around a subject with detailed sketches, in a fairly rapid gesture using Indian ink, brush and pen. This allows me to keep a gesture and rendering that’s rather lively. I draw a multitude of them, and I keep the best ones.

As for the themes, they’re tinged with second degree, the sheer number making the subject seem insignificant and absurd, especially if it’s duck asses.

Tinged with humor, Outnumbered plays with the ridiculous, the cute, a little elegance and a lot of the law of numbers.

16 Cat Butts

21 x 30 x 0.2 cm
16 pieces

Ink on cardboard

The first Outnumbered series.

I love cats, I’ve had them and I always will, mine is eating as I write. There are many of us on this planet who love cats for the smallest of things, which almost everyone shares.

Among the things I love about cats, visually I mean, are the cute and even funny parts. The tips of the paws, the nose, the ears, the tongue, the tiny teeth between the canines…and their butts. This mix of grace and ridiculousness is part of what makes me appreciate cats. I took mine as an example and imagined the others.

All right, I also like to do series of tushies, simply for the sheer folly of numbers. Having dozens of butts (of anything, for that matter) multiplied in front of you makes me smile just writing it.

In any case, here are 16 cat’s hindquarters, 16 of the countless facets of love.

Thanks for your time!

49 Duck Butts

17 x 17 x 0.1 cm
49 pieces

Ink on 80g. Drawing paper

The neck, the head and the cute, ridiculous, haphazard shape of ducks and ducklings and a silhouette that makes me laugh or at least smile every time.

I love to see them just walking, evolving, having to cope with this body they’ve got no control over, having to fall, jump, dive – in short, I love little ducks.

So why not throw myself and a spectator into 49 ducks seen from behind, walking, jumping, falling, flying or simply standing there, in front of us.
I’d go through each piece very quickly and pick out the best ones. I like the symmetry of the square, to simplify the shape and focus on the multitude of ducks.

Thanks for your time!

Scott

10 x 12 x 0.3cm
20 pieces

Ink on Cardboard

A commission for a dog lover.

Scott is a cute little terrier, whom I was invited to frame in 20 positions.

It’s an exercise I love, as it allows me to turn around a beautiful animal, a piece of nature, quietly with a technique I appreciate. I’m given a few photos to get an idea of the animal, and I take some of the beautiful positions and draw them as they are, but for the most part, they’re variations imagined by yours truly, around the breed, resembling Scott.

The formats are quite small, which I worked on serenely under the light of a table, arm poised, listening to the pen on paper, before framing it all with love and a nice frame, ordered for the occasion.
